Abstract
Purpose: Having a leadership framework based on best evidence is necessary to ensure that educational leaders are equipped with the required skills to develop medical and health professionals. However, there is paucity of this research in the Asian setting. This study aimed to identify the leadership styles and approaches in an Asian academic medical centre. Methods: A sequential explanatory design in a mixed method approach was used. Purposeful sampling was utilised to identify educational leaders at the National University Health System between 2016 and 2017. Respondents rated the items in a 52-question questionnaire pertaining to five leadership competencies and participated in a semi-structured face-to-face interview. Descriptive and thematic analysis were used for quantitative and qualitative data-respectively. Results: Thirty-six people participated in the survey and they viewed self-management and social responsibility as the least (4.28) and most (4.61) important competency respectively. The two highest rated items (honesty and integrity; being accountable) from the questionnaire came from the social responsibility competency. Ten participants were interviewed and the qualitative data revealed six domains: Cognitive, Technical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Development and Innovative. There was more emphasis on interpersonal domain and three symbiotic relationships among these domains were observed, with some potentially contributing to the development of self or peers. Conclusions: Our study explored the leader-centred and cultural-centred aspects of leadership. The findings revealed that the competencies that our participants viewed as important were relatively similar to those of Western studies. Additionally, there is a relationship between some of these competencies, which may promote self- or peer-development.
