Abstract
Background: The Ottawa Resident Observation Form for Nurses (O-RON) has established a novel residency evaluation tool based on nurses' perspectives. This study aimed to translate and build a validated Chinese version of the O-RON (O-RON-CH). Methods: The O-RON was translated into a Chinese version following the guidelines of forward-backward translation and cross-cultural adaptation. Nurses working in the orthopedics ward and older than 18 years were included in the study. Those who could not complete the test-retest within 14-30 days were excluded. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to calculate test-retest reliability, and Cronbach's alpha was used to evaluate internal consistency. Results: This study included 37 orthopedic nurses with a mean age of 30 ± 8 years. The mean test-retest interval was 15 ± 2.3 days. The internal consistency of this study was fair, with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.70. The O-RON-CH questionnaire was divided into two parts. The first part of the question had great-to-excellent test-retest reliability, with ICC ranging from 0.79 to 0.91. The ICC for the second part of the question, a yes/no question, was 0.85. Conclusions: The O-RON-CH demonstrated fair internal consistency and good-to-excellent test-retest reliability and thus appears to be a validated and reliable tool for evaluating residency in countries using Chinese.
