Abstract

Mobile health applications (mHealth apps) have become increasingly prevalent in clinical practice. First line healthcare professionals play a critical role in providing psychoeducation for chronic patients and their families or facilitating self-care via mHealth apps. It is imperative to explore the teaching strategies for healthcare professionals and learning techniques for patients and primary caregivers. This review examines the utilization of mHealth apps in chronic disease self-management and evaluates their impact on teaching strategies. The findings highlight the potential of mHealth applications to enhance the teaching and learning experience between healthcare professionals, patients, and primary care staffs. The applications' benefits include user-centered design, a well-defined mHealth app training program, personalized educational content, real-time feedback, and interactive features; all of which contribute to heightened user engagement and motivation. Future research should focus on evaluating the effectiveness of instructional strategies from multiple user perspectives. Additionally, there should be an emphasis on integrating mHealth app technologies and applications into the education of clinical professionals.
