Abstract
Purpose: Globalization has increased transnational physician training and practice, highlighting the need for understanding various medical education (ME) systems. This study aimed to compare the physician training systems in Taiwan and the United States (US), with particular emphasis on the program types, enrollment targets, and program durations. To contextualize these comparisons, data from 15 additional countries were also analyzed. Methods of study: Data obtained from databases, medical school websites, ME accreditation organizations, and media sources were analyzed using Bereday's comparative educational method and document analysis. Results: Most medical schools in Taiwan offer single-major programs wherein high school graduates enroll in a 6-year medicine program but bachelor's degree holders enter a 4-year postbaccalaureate program. Cross-disciplinary programs are limited. Meanwhile, the US offers a primary 3- or 4-year single-major program that recruits bachelor's degree holders, although most schools offer two or three cross-disciplinary options. Synthesis of transnational data revealed no unified standard for program duration and enrollment targets. Taiwan's system aligns with European and other Asian countries, whereas the US has a system similar to that in Canada. Conclusions: This study identified notable differences in physician education programs between Taiwan and the US, reflecting distinct local healthcare needs. The comparative analysis of program durations and enrollment strategies across multiple countries enhances our understanding of the global landscape of ME.
