Abstract
The web-based anatomical atlas of the National Taiwan University (NTU-WAA) was established in response to the reduction in teaching hours and reported to enhance the anatomy learning of nursing students. This study aimed to further analyze the use time over the entire semester and explore the learning outcomes of a large-scale cohort of students from seven nonmedical/dental healthcare professions using the NTU-WAA for their anatomy learning. The anatomy scores of lecture and laboratory examinations and questionnaires from 222 students were collected and analyzed. Participants were categorized into subgroups based on their self-report use time on NTU-WAA: less than 1 hour (< 1 h), 1-3 hour(s) (1-3 h), and more than 3 hours (> 3 h). The relationship between use time and examination performance was investigated. Questionnaire results showed that most students used the NTU-WAA for 1-3 h (40.7%) throughout the semester and 95% agreed that NTU-WAA is helpful for learning anatomy. The laboratory scores of the final examination obtained by < 1 h subgroup were significantly lower than 1-3 h subgroup. However, the lecture scores were lower in > 3 h subgroup compared to 1-3 h. In conclusion, the NTU-WAA enhances anatomy laboratory learning with 1-3 hours of use, making it a useful supplementary anatomy-learning tool for students from nonmedical/dental healthcare professions. However, excessive use time may be associated with lower anatomy lecture scores, though the exact cause is unclear. Further research could be conducted to explore potential factors such as learning styles, learning methods.
