Abstract

Background: The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is an essential assessment tool for anesthesia specialist nurses in Taiwan. However, preparing for the OSCE is resource-intensive, requiring significant personnel, time, and financial investment. The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated traditional OSCE arrangements, highlighting the need for remote assessment alternatives. This study evaluates the eff ectiveness of an electronic OSCE (e-OSCE) system as a flexible, cost-effective, and scalable solution for anesthesia nurse training. Methods: This descriptive statistical analysis study involved 50 participants, including 25 certified anesthesia specialist nurses and 25 anesthesia nurse examinees. Participants used a semi-interactive web-based e-OSCE system incorporating self-recorded audio practice and remote interviews via an online conferencing platform. A validated satisfaction questionnaire was administered using a 7-point Likert scale, with an overall score above 5 considered eff ective. Results: The study demonstrated high user satisfaction, with an overall satisfaction score of 6.6 out of 7 (p < 0.05). All participants agreed that the e-OSCE system helped them prepare for the national examination. Subgroup analysis showed no significant differences in satisfaction between certified nurses and examinees, except in test content coverage, where students reported higher satisfaction. By the end of 2024, all 25 trainees successfully passed the national examination on their fi rst attempt. Conclusions: The e-OSCE system eff ectively reduces logistical barriers, enhances accessibility, and minimizes exam-related stress while maintaining high satisfaction rates. Given these outcomes, this approach appears to be a promising complement to traditional OSCEs and serve as a potential model for advancing medical education in Taiwan and beyond.
