Abstract

Statement of the problem: This study designed an innovative nursing-humanities program to cultivate humanistic values, which, although overshadowed by routine clinical demands, are fundamental to nursing practice. Methods: A one-hour humanities tutorial was developed for nursing interns using the instructional design framework of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation, incorporating principles from the self-determination theory. The program featured a curated history exhibition and guided tour. Data on participants’ perspectives were collected through pre- and post-tests, refl ective discussions, and feedback. A mixed-methods design was adopted, employing both quantitative and qualitative analyses. Results: A total of 230 participants completed the program. Signifi cant improvements were observed between pre- and post-test mean scores, particularly in comprehension of nursing history. The interactive discussions were also vital in stimulating learning motivation. The assessments demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach’s α>.84) in cognition of nursing history, and participant satisfaction ratings exceeded 96%, indicating the program’s effectiveness. Conclusions: The humanities program fostered a deeper understanding of nursing history and refl ection, encouraged professional virtues, and reinforced nursing practice’s emotional and ethical aspects.
