The Skilled Facilitator in Problem-based Learning
Abstract
Problem-based learning (PBL) begins with a problem for inquiry and decision-making in a group environment, which requires the facilitator to guide the group in both process and content. A skilled facilitator would have to show leadership in 3basic areas: conflict management, group management and intervention management. Intervention targets have the acronym TARGET, which represents the Task, Authority, Reward, Group, Evaluation and Time structures that are the primary motivation targets in learner groups. The shift in learning paradigm from teacher-centered information-loading schemes to student-centered inquiry-based learning would also need a corresponding shift in resources, with the facilitative leader ensuring that the learners have the means and ability to utilize those resources. In conclusion, the skilled facilitator in PBL is the crucial leader of the group in conflict management, group management and intervention target manipulation.
